Greek Revival
This style, based on ancient Greek temples, is considered the first truly American architectural style. Americans associated the style with the ideals of Greek democracy and linked it with the similar aspirations of American government. In its early years, Chicago had many Greek Revival houses, but only a handful remain. Common characteristics are:
- overall cubic form
- classical Greek ornament, such as columns
- gable roofs combined with pediments
