Color Options

Color Options is a collapsible link that is used to manipulate data points appearances. It is only visible when a search is being created. Each dataset has a default color theme. Although by design each dataset is assigned a default color, the points can be altered by color, size, opacity and transforming from a point to a bubble on a map.

Customizing the color of the data points

To change the appearance of a data point, select "Color Options"; the link collapses revealing "COLOR", "POINT/BUBBLE" toggle switch, "POINT SIZE" and "OPACITY" increment/decrement operators. Click on the COLOR palette box; a selection of pre-loaded palette of colors will appear with a check-mark on the default color of the dataset data point.

Changing the size and opacity of the points

By default, the data point is set to 6pts and the opacity is set at 85, the size and the opacity can be altered by increasing or decreasing the point size and/or opacity level using the increment/decrement operator by each feature. Changing the transparency can be helpful when having difficulty viewing teeming data on a map.

Bubble Plotting

Bubble plotting replaces the data points with data bubbles. There is a toggle feature called SIZE that switches between plotting a point or bubble on the map. The bubble is comprised of latitude/ longitude coordinates, numerical variables along with a third data series. The plotting feature is available for specific datasets (West Nile Virus).

How to Create a Bubble Map

  1. Setup a search from a dataset that has the plotting feature.
  2. Click on "Color Options".
  3. Click on the "SIZE" toggle; the toggle fills when its active and triggers the bubble plot feature.
  4. A drop menu appears to the right of the screen, the menu has a list of variables that are used to vary the size of the bubble. Select the desired field from the drop menu.

Note: If the dataset used for the search does not have bubble plotting as a feature the drop menu will not not display any fields.

  1. Click "Get Data".
